What Is Scalp Micropigmentation?
A non-surgical cosmetic treatment that creates the appearance of natural hair follicles, greater density or more even scalp coverage.
Scalp micropigmentation is a specialized form of cosmetic tattooing performed with pigments, needles and techniques developed specifically for the scalp.
Instead of growing new hair, SMP reduces the visual contrast created by exposed scalp. It can recreate the appearance of a closely shaved hairline, make thinning areas appear denser and help blend scars or irregular areas into the surrounding scalp.
At our San Francisco SMP studio, every treatment is customized according to the client's skin tone, hair color, existing follicle pattern and preferred style.
What Is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation, often shortened to SMP, is a specialized cosmetic tattooing technique designed specifically for the scalp. An SMP artist places thousands of small pigment impressions that resemble the appearance of hair follicles.
Depending on the client's needs, these impressions can recreate a closely shaved hairline, reduce the contrast between the scalp and existing hair or help camouflage scars and areas affected by alopecia. The most natural results depend on precise pigment selection, placement depth, impression size, spacing and hairline design. How Does Scalp Micropigmentation Work?
An SMP artist uses a fine, single-point needle to place pigment impressions into the upper layer of the scalp. Each impression is shaped, sized and angled to visually mimic a hair follicle. Impressions are layered across multiple sessions so pigment settles cleanly and the finished density looks natural at every angle.
What Can SMP Be Used For?
- • Receding hairlines
- • Male pattern hair loss
- • Thinning crowns
- • Diffuse thinning
- • Widening part lines
- • FUE and FUT transplant scars
- • Alopecia camouflage
- • Other healed scalp scars
Does SMP Grow Hair?
No. SMP does not regrow hair or treat the underlying cause of hair loss. It creates the visual appearance of follicles or greater density by reducing the contrast between the scalp and existing hair.
How Natural Does SMP Look?
A well-designed treatment blends into your existing hair pattern. Feathered hairline edges, varied impression sizes and pigment custom-matched to your skin undertone are what keep the finished pattern reading as hair rather than as tattoo work.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Most adults with hair loss, thinning, transplant scars or alopecia are candidates. A free in-studio consultation is the best way to confirm whether SMP is appropriate for your goals. Clients with active scalp conditions or unexplained hair loss should seek medical clearance before treatment.
How Long Does SMP Last?
SMP is long-lasting rather than truly permanent. Most clients enjoy their result for several years before considering a refresh session, depending on skin type, sun exposure and personal preference.

The Scalp Micropigmentation Process
Most clients complete treatment in two or three sessions, typically spaced approximately two weeks apart. Building the result gradually allows the pigment to settle and gives the artist greater control over the final density and shape.
- 1
Consultation and assessment
Discuss your goals, evaluate the treatment area and design a plan based on your hair pattern, skin tone and preferred result.
- 2
First SMP session
The initial foundation layer is placed at a lighter density to establish the shape, tone and treatment pattern.
- 3
Density and refinement
Additional impressions are layered between the first session's healed pigment to create greater depth and coverage.
- 4
Final detailing(if needed)
When needed, a third session refines the hairline, balances density and completes the blend.
Spacing between visits gives the scalp time to heal cleanly and lets each layer settle before the next is placed.
