SMP for Men

Scalp Micropigmentation for Men in San Francisco

A customized, non-surgical option for receding hairlines, thinning crowns, advanced hair loss and scalp scars.

A Natural-Looking Solution for Male Hair Loss

Scalp micropigmentation recreates the visual pattern of hair follicles using precisely placed pigment impressions. For clients who wear their hair closely shaved, SMP can create the appearance of a defined hairline and more even scalp coverage. For men who retain longer hair, carefully placed density work can reduce the contrast caused by thinning areas.

Every treatment at Derma Follic SMP is designed around your face shape, natural hairline pattern, hair color, skin tone and preferred hairstyle. If you are new to SMP, start with the full process walkthrough or browse before-and-after examples.

Men's Hairline Restoration

Best fit for

  • Receding hairlines
  • Mature hairlines
  • Temple recession
  • Uneven front line
  • Norwood 2–3 patterns
  • Definition for younger men

Create a softer, balanced hairline that follows the natural shape of your forehead and temples rather than a straight or artificial-looking line.

Every hairline is designed around the specific geometry of your temples, forehead and existing hair pattern — considering age, face shape and how you want the final look to read at different lengths.

The finished result frames the face and restores symmetry, without crossing into the sharp, painted-on look that gives poorly done SMP a bad reputation.

Full Scalp Coverage

Best fit for

  • Advanced pattern loss
  • Full-scalp thinning
  • Norwood 5–7 patterns
  • Committed to the shaved look
  • Post-transplant density issues

Create the appearance of a closely shaved head of hair for more advanced patterns of hair loss.

For men who have moved into fully bald or nearly bald patterns, full scalp SMP creates the visual impression of a fresh, uniform buzz across the entire top of the head.

Once complete, the result is genuinely low maintenance — no fibers, no daily concealers and no worry about weather washing anything away.

Density SMP for Thinning Hair

Commonly requested for

  • Thinning crowns
  • Diffuse thinning on top
  • Temple recession with longer hair
  • Early-stage hair loss
  • Post-shed density loss

Reduce scalp visibility beneath existing hair across the crown, mid-scalp or other thinning areas.

Not everyone wants — or needs — the shaved look. If you carry length on top and the scalp reads through under bright lights or in photos, density SMP places pigment between your existing hairs to soften that contrast.

The point is not to paint density in. It is to close the visual gap between hair and skin so the eye reads a fuller head.

Hair Transplant Scar Concealment

Best fit for

  • FUT (strip) scars
  • FUE dot scars
  • Surgical scars
  • Accident and burn scars
  • Scars visible with short cuts

Camouflage healed FUE dot scars, FUT strip scars and other scalp scars by blending them into the surrounding follicle pattern.

Whether it is a linear FUT scar sitting behind the ears or the scattered pin-dot scarring left by FUE work, SMP can significantly reduce how much any of it reads through short hair.

Scar tissue behaves differently than healthy scalp, so this work is done in careful, small layers with adjustments after each visit as we watch how the pigment settles.

Beard and Facial SMP

Helps with

  • Patchy beards
  • Beard gap fill
  • Weak cheek lines
  • Sparse mustaches
  • Uneven goatees
  • Facial scars

Improve the appearance of selected patchy areas, uneven beard lines or healed facial scars.

Beard SMP applies the scalp technique on a smaller canvas. It builds the appearance of density inside patchy areas, sharpens cheek and neck lines and evens out spots where facial hair does not want to grow in.

Blended into your existing beard length, it is designed to look like more of the beard you already have — not a drawn-on shape.

Why Men Choose SMP

Low maintenance. Customized. Non-surgical.

SMP does not require daily fibers, sprays, adhesives or styling products. Once treatment is complete and healed, the result becomes part of your normal appearance.

The goal is not to make you look like a different person. It is to create a hairline or level of coverage that feels balanced, natural and easier to maintain.

  • Sharper, more defined hairline
  • Cleaner shaved-head look
  • Reduced scalp shine
  • Appearance of greater density
  • Transplant scars blended into hair
  • A more balanced-looking face
  • Low-maintenance daily routine
Step by step

The Scalp Micropigmentation Process

Most clients complete treatment in two or three sessions, typically spaced approximately two weeks apart. Building the result gradually allows the pigment to settle and gives the artist greater control over the final density and shape.

  1. 1

    Consultation and assessment

Discuss your goals, evaluate the treatment area and design a plan based on your hair pattern, skin tone and preferred result.

  2. 2

    First SMP session

The initial foundation layer is placed at a lighter density to establish the shape, tone and treatment pattern.

  3. 3

    Density and refinement

Additional impressions are layered between the first session's healed pigment to create greater depth and coverage.

  4. 4

    Final detailing(if needed)

When needed, a third session refines the hairline, balances density and completes the blend.

Spacing between visits gives the scalp time to heal cleanly and lets each layer settle before the next is placed.

Only if you want a fully shaved look or are restoring a hairline on a mostly bald scalp. If you keep longer hair, density work is placed underneath your existing hair without changing your hairstyle.
