The Scalp Micropigmentation Process

What to expect before, during and after your SMP sessions at our San Francisco studio.

Step by step

The Scalp Micropigmentation Process

Most clients complete treatment in two or three sessions, typically spaced approximately two weeks apart. Building the result gradually allows the pigment to settle and gives the artist greater control over the final density and shape.

  1. 1

    Consultation and assessment

Discuss your goals, evaluate the treatment area and design a plan based on your hair pattern, skin tone and preferred result.

  2. 2

    First SMP session

The initial foundation layer is placed at a lighter density to establish the shape, tone and treatment pattern.

  3. 3

    Density and refinement

Additional impressions are layered between the first session's healed pigment to create greater depth and coverage.

  4. 4

    Final detailing(if needed)

When needed, a third session refines the hairline, balances density and completes the blend.

Spacing between visits gives the scalp time to heal cleanly and lets each layer settle before the next is placed.

What Happens During Scalp Micropigmentation?

1

Consultation and scalp assessment

Your artist examines the treatment area, discusses your goals and determines whether scalp micropigmentation is appropriate for the result you want. For hairline treatments, the shape is discussed and mapped before pigment is applied. For density work, the artist evaluates the existing hair pattern and areas of visible scalp.

2

Hairline and pigment design

The pigment tone is selected to complement your skin tone, existing follicles and hair color. The treatment pattern, density and hairline shape are then planned together before any pigment is placed.

3

First SMP session

The initial layer establishes the foundation of the result. Impressions are spaced conservatively so additional density can be added after the first layer heals. Sessions commonly last approximately two to four hours, depending on the treatment area.

4

Initial healing and aftercare

Temporary redness or mild sensitivity may occur after treatment. Clients receive aftercare instructions covering washing, sweating, sun exposure and other activities during healing.

5

Second session

The healed first layer is assessed, and additional pigment impressions are placed to increase density, refine the blend and strengthen the result.

6

Final refinement

When a third session is needed, the artist adjusts remaining areas, softens transitions and completes the final balance.

7

Long-term maintenance

SMP gradually lightens over time. A future refresh may be recommended depending on sun exposure, skin characteristics, treatment style and personal preference.
