SMP for Women

Scalp Micropigmentation for Women in San Francisco

Soft, low-contrast scalp density designed to reduce visible scalp beneath your existing hair.

Subtle Scalp Density for Thinning Hair

Hair thinning in women often appears as a widening part, reduced coverage through the crown or greater scalp visibility beneath longer hair.

Women's density SMP is different from the closely shaved treatment commonly associated with male scalp micropigmentation. Fine pigment impressions are placed beneath the existing hair to reduce the contrast between the hair and scalp. There is normally no need to shave the treatment area — the goal is not to replace individual strands but to help the existing hair appear fuller by making the scalp less visually prominent.

At Derma Follic SMP, pigment is selected according to your hair color and skin undertone, while placement is adjusted to your natural part, growth pattern and areas of visible thinning. Learn how each session works in our process walkthrough.

SMP for Diffuse Thinning

Best fit for

  • Diffuse female thinning
  • Postpartum shed
  • Perimenopause density loss
  • Visible scalp in bright light
  • Volume loss across the top

Create more even-looking coverage across areas where the scalp has become visible without one clearly defined bald area.

Rather than trying to draw in individual follicles, the technique places soft pigment underneath your existing hair. That reduces the contrast between scalp and strand, so the hair reads noticeably fuller without touching your length or your style.

The intent is a shadow, not a paint job — nothing should look dark, dense or dramatic in daylight.

Part-Line Density

Best fit for

  • Widening part lines
  • Scalp visible when tied up
  • Thinning at the top
  • Volume loss at the crown
  • See-through ponytail line

Reduce the appearance of a widening or increasingly visible part while preserving the client's normal hairstyle.

A widening part is often the first place thinning becomes obvious — especially under overhead lighting or in photos. Delicate pigment placement along and around the part brings the visible scalp closer to your hair color.

It is the quickest treatment on the menu, and for many clients it is all they need.

Crown and Mid-Scalp Density

Best fit for

  • Thinning crown
  • Mid-scalp density loss
  • Female pattern hair loss
  • Aging-related loss
  • Post-illness shedding

Layer subtle pigment beneath existing hair through the crown and upper scalp.

For thinning that reaches beyond the part into the crown or mid-scalp, we layer pigment gradually across multiple sessions. Each layer sits underneath the surrounding hair so the pigment blends visually rather than replacing it.

Done well, the finished result reads like more of your own hair — not a wig, not a system, not a shadow you can spot up close.

Alopecia and Scar Camouflage

Best fit for

  • Alopecia areata
  • Traction alopecia
  • Scarring alopecia
  • Surgical / accident scars
  • Post-chemo regrowth blending

Blend selected healed scars or stable areas affected by alopecia into the surrounding scalp when SMP is appropriate.

Scars leave areas where hair no longer grows, which draws the eye every time the hair is parted or pulled back. Careful pigment placement inside and around the scar softens that contrast so it disappears into the surrounding pattern.

The same approach works for alopecia areata patches, traction alopecia (often from tight hairstyles) and scarring alopecia — with the technique adjusted for each pattern.

Why women choose SMP

Fuller-Looking Hair Without Daily Concealers

Scalp powders, fibers and sprays require repeated application and may transfer during normal wear. Women's density SMP creates a longer-lasting visual reduction in scalp contrast without attaching anything to the existing hair.

SMP does not stop hair loss or treat its underlying medical cause. Clients experiencing new, rapid or unexplained thinning should consult an appropriate medical professional.

  • Fuller-looking hair without daily concealers
  • Softer, less visible part line
  • Reduced scalp visibility
  • Blended alopecia patches
  • No fibers, powders or sprays
  • No changes to your existing hairstyle
  • Long-lasting, low-maintenance results
Step by step

The Scalp Micropigmentation Process

Most clients complete treatment in two or three sessions, typically spaced approximately two weeks apart. Building the result gradually allows the pigment to settle and gives the artist greater control over the final density and shape.

  1. 1

    Consultation and assessment

Discuss your goals, evaluate the treatment area and design a plan based on your hair pattern, skin tone and preferred result.

  2. 2

    First SMP session

The initial foundation layer is placed at a lighter density to establish the shape, tone and treatment pattern.

  3. 3

    Density and refinement

Additional impressions are layered between the first session's healed pigment to create greater depth and coverage.

  4. 4

    Final detailing(if needed)

When needed, a third session refines the hairline, balances density and completes the blend.

Spacing between visits gives the scalp time to heal cleanly and lets each layer settle before the next is placed.
