How Scalp Micropigmentation Is Applied

Each pigment impression is placed individually using a fine, single-point needle. Density is built gradually across multiple sessions so the finished pattern blends naturally with your existing follicles, hair color and skin tone.

Nothing is stamped or applied from a standard template. The hairline, density and treatment pattern are customized for each client.

Step by step

The Scalp Micropigmentation Process

Most clients complete treatment in two or three sessions, typically spaced approximately two weeks apart. Building the result gradually allows the pigment to settle and gives the artist greater control over the final density and shape.

  1. 1

    Consultation and assessment

Discuss your goals, evaluate the treatment area and design a plan based on your hair pattern, skin tone and preferred result.

  2. 2

    First SMP session

The initial foundation layer is placed at a lighter density to establish the shape, tone and treatment pattern.

  3. 3

    Density and refinement

Additional impressions are layered between the first session's healed pigment to create greater depth and coverage.

  4. 4

    Final detailing(if needed)

When needed, a third session refines the hairline, balances density and completes the blend.

Spacing between visits gives the scalp time to heal cleanly and lets each layer settle before the next is placed.

The basics

What Is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation, often shortened to SMP, is a specialized cosmetic tattooing technique designed specifically for the scalp. An SMP artist places thousands of small pigment impressions that resemble the appearance of hair follicles.

Depending on the client's needs, these impressions can recreate a closely shaved hairline, reduce the contrast between the scalp and existing hair or help camouflage scars and areas affected by alopecia. The most natural results depend on precise pigment selection, placement depth, impression size, spacing and hairline design. Derma Follic SMP is a specialist scalp micropigmentation studio in San Francisco focused on natural-looking men's hairlines and subtle women's density treatments. The goal is not to create an obvious or overly sharp result — it is to create balanced coverage that fits your face, existing hair pattern and preferred style.

Where Clinical Care Meets SMP Artistry

Many SMP providers come from a traditional body-art background. Barbara Anne Vergara brings something different: professional nursing experience combined with advanced scalp micropigmentation artistry.

That means every client receives a higher level of personal care, careful consultation, sanitation awareness, precision, and attention throughout the treatment process.

This is not assembly-line SMP. It is nurse-led, one-on-one treatment designed to create natural-looking results that fit you.

Reviews

Our Glowing Reviews

"Walked in a little skeptical — walked out looking sharper than I have in years. The team took time with the hairline design and never oversold the density. People noticed something changed but nobody has guessed what."
MMarcus
"The thing that surprised me most was how relaxed the session was. No stinging, no fuss, just a couple of hours of quiet work. My scalp doesn't shine through anymore and my hair reads much thicker."
DDaniel
"I'd been hiding my FUT scar under longer styles for years. After two sessions here it just… disappears into the hair. I stopped thinking about it, which is what I really wanted."
SSophia
"My part had gotten so wide I stopped putting my hair up. After the density work my scalp barely reads through anymore. Even my hairdresser assumed I was on a new supplement."
JJessica
"Temple recession in my late twenties absolutely wrecked my confidence. The redesigned hairline is realistic — not a straight-line cartoon — and it actually suits my face. Zero regrets."
RRyan
"Root sprays, fibers, powders — I'd tried all of them and hated all of them. This is the first thing that actually solved the problem instead of covering it up every morning."
